View Full Version : Fun word usage question.
Was just thinking about this one this morning. "Silverware" drawer or "flatware" drawer? Which saying do you use in your home to describe the location where cutlery is kept? (Silverware is used in our house, even though I have no actual silverware).

"silverware" drawer which has a few pieces of silver but most are stainless. We keep the family silver elsewhere.
Silverware here too, even though almost none of it is actually made of silver. I figure it's silver in colour, so good enough. :)
We always say silverware or cutlery, no matter what the material actually is.

We always say silverware. At work, we have plastic silverware ;)
We say silverware too even though I sold off most of the silver.
Silverware. Because stainless steel ware is just too long to say. :)
I think I just say "the drawer" and I think DH knows what I'm talking about. Hmmmmm
I mean, there are other drawers in the house, but if we're in the kitchen and DH wants to know where his special fork is, it's either in "the drawer" or in "the dishwasher". But I'll pay more attention now and see what I DO say.

Cutlery drawer - kitchen tools drawer - crockery/china cupboard.

Well it was the silverware drawer but now that I think about it, it will from now on be the 'stainless steel and knives with wooden handles' drawer. I do have real silverware but never use it and it is kept in the silverware shoe box upstairs in the attic.

silverware, although the only item of real silver, a large serving spoon is in the cooking utensils drawer, as it doesn't fit in the holder for the "silverware", which is all stainless.....

Like Serendipity I don't think I call it anything, but refer to the spoons, forks etc. as "silverware" although they are all mostly stainless (a few silverplate).
Thanks for dropping by for a visit with me and sharing. :) "Silverware" seems to be the favoured word choice here thus far.

I always used "silverware drawer", though there was no real silver in it. The silver is in a chest, which seems to move around, depending on where I find a place to put it that is out of the way. There is some silver in the buffet's "silverware drawer" in the dining room, too. I'm not sure if that is confusing to anyone else, but my family seemed to know which one I was talking about.
Yes, I don't have any 'SILVER' but call the cutlery 'silverware'.
Hi Domestic goddess and Tiam. :) "Silverware" is definitely the favoured word or saying of choice. This has been a fun thread.
Bumping this thread, because I liked it so much!
Hoping to hear from a few others Re:.
Utensil drawer. Definitely not "flatware," although that fits the description a lot better than "silverware."

we have a lack of storage space in our kitchen..so we refer to the silverware jars
we store ours on the counter in mason jars like this (http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbnid=LsD83Q57v_1imM:&imgrefurl=http://www.etsy.com/listing/98321717/mason-jar-silverware-holders-with-hand&docid=ErY5urmlCO6bRM&imgurl=http://img1.etsystatic.com/000/0/6715017/il_fullxfull.331474769.jpg&w=1500&h=1267&ei=1090UMiXCKyx0QGVnYHgDg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=228&sig=103516132419893719391&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=165&start=0&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:76&tx=69&ty=104&biw=1257&bih=777)
silverware or utensil drawer. Or knife/spoon/fork drawer, whatever someone is looking for.
If I had a drawer it would be silverware because that is what everyone I know calls those utensils, although I have always called it flatware. None of it is silver or flat except for the table knives. And, I have all of it a mug, in the shelf near the plates.
The cooking knives are kind of flat, and whilst they share their drawer space with the corkscrew and his motley assortment of buddies, that is the knife drawer.
Even though no one asked, all of the other cooking utensils are in this stainless steel container on the counter.
I have only two drawers.

Sounds like we have a similar kitchen, Jilly. I had to get pretty creative with storing stuff. I have a black book case that holds all my plates, bowls and cups. It actually looks nice believe it or not :)
Love the additional entries! Thanks you guys!

Silverware drawer here, although there is actually no silverware in it, just eating utensils. :)

I live in the lower unit of a restored Victorian, circa 1800. The kitchen and the bathroom are almost the same size. The galley kitchen is great in so many ways, easy to keep clean and a real challenge to organize stuff in the two cabinets that go up to the ten-foot ceiling. Half-size refrigerator and I cannot fully open the stove door unless I move the garbage can.
Put two people in there and they have to be good friends, and three people have to be intimate. Seriously intimate. Yep.
I am thinking how to find and get a wardrobe cabinet over here. I would put it in my bedroom and store cooking equipment and a small stockpile.
cutlery or spoon drawer.........
Love all the new entries!
No actual real silverware in the drawer either, but somehow I just love the old-fashionedness of the name, silverware.

We call our silverware also, although we usually relate to it as -- can you get me some forks and knives. When I am setting a big place setting I then refer to it as silverware -- although we have none of the sort...
"Silverware", rolls off the tongue so pleasantly. :)

Thanks tussie! I love love love mason jars! They are my favorite organizing tool. I use then for everything...cotton balls and qtips in the bathroom, change on the dresser, hair ties for the girls, candle holders, pretty much anything i can fit in there lol
I love glass jars, containers, bottles, etc, too! I've been waiting for my laundry room to be completed so I can buy one or two special apothecary jars, and set-out some things in them to add a warm design touch to the room. Can't wait!
I have a good/better set of stainless steel that I keep for company (it came in a ugly cardboard box) and it is now kepted nicely in an old clay wine cooler,
I wrap each set of utensils e.g. forks, spoons in a cloth napkin. The whole thing can be bought out to set the table.
Good use of an item I was not using anymore.
How unique is that, Danna!
Silverware. I think I have six tiny spoons made of silver, though...the rest is stainless steel stuff from Target or Walmart! :)
That's six more than me, Selah! LOL!
Silverware drawer and frequently used tool drawer. Although admittedly, I don't have an infrequently used tool drawer. I do have a junk drawer...
I can honestly say that we don't have a junk drawer! LMAO! Junk drawers were a pet-peeve of mine right from the time I was a kid, so I went out of my way to ensure the likes of such drawers would not exist in my home, and they don't! :)
