Alan.....I think you mentioned in my other car thread that you had also had a computer screen in your car. I've been reading my manual and can't seem to figure out how/if I can just turn the screen off. I wouldn't mind just having the time up there, but I can't seem to get rid of of other stuff, like "Bluetooth is turned off". I can't seem to find a button anywhere that would turn it off. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I could be mistaken, but I thought the back up camera was a mandated safety feature being phased in, therefore it couldn't be turned off.

Hmmm......I didn't think of that......but can I at least have just a black screen with the time on it? I'm thinking that the back up camera would engage when I was in reverse and show up on the screen.....even if the screen was black the rest of the time..??

CathyA, your question intrigued me, so I did a little Web searching. Didn't find anything that answers your question directly, but I did find a couple of possibilities.

One is a button on your steering wheel with an icon that looks like a rectangle with three rectangles behind it. Pressing this repeatedly apparently switches screen modes and one of the choices is "off" (or as "off" as it gets, since apparently a status line is always displayed).

Another is settings you can explore in this thread: http://www.odyclub.com/forums/11-audio-video-security-navigation/140631-2011-nav-screen-problems.html (http://2011 Nav Screen Problems)

Hope either one helps....

Hmmm, I'm not aware of any way to turn it off on mine. Mine is on a Volkswagen Passat TDI and probably does things differently than yours. Like Steve, I'm now intrigued as well. I'll look into it when I get a chance.

Interesting concept. On our Subaru, I haven't seen anything, but I am usually a passenger so it doesn't concern me. One thing that I think is silly is that they have a lot of extraneous stuff on the screen, but the time and temperature are relegated to very small numerals that appear well below the touch screen. The information that I would be most likely to glance at semi-frequently and that would be most useful is actually difficult to see. Go figure. Overall, though, we are pretty happy with the Subaru.

Thanks Steve. I need to spend more time on it, but I did find those 3 rectangles. I'll go out this afternoon and see if it works.

The most I can figure out, to get the screen blank, is to choose the radio and then leave it empty. Man, this is going to take awhile.

I did drive it to town this morning and it's very nice. Like everything new to me, it takes awhile to accept it. And it was really bothering me that the driver seat didn't go back very far. But I accidentally found out (by testing out the room in the 2nd row of seats), that the seat wasn't as far back as it could go on it's track. I played with the knobs, and finally got it to go back farther.

It has an "ECO" green light on the speed and tachometer screen that goes on and off all the time........whenever you are at the speed that is most efficient.......which is about 40mph. Seems kinda of silly to me.
Reminds me sort of my old Volvo wagon that had a light come on every time you were supposed to shift. It was their way of telling the driver that it's better to shift early, than late.

All sorts of surprises in this car.....

Oh....and my screen does show a movie........whenever I turn on the right turn signal, it plays some stupid movie of part of a car going down the road and it shows sidewalks, etc. It plays this same movie every dang time I put the right turn signal on. Seems like they'd show better movies for all the money I spent. :laff:

Okay, I took a closer look at mine. Normally, the content of the display is dependent upon which mode I have it set to. Map equals GPS map of current location, Nav equals map plus directions, Band equals Radio presets, etc.
For the first time, apparently, ever, I turned off the radio and guess what? I then got a big black screen with nothing but time in the middle.

It might not work the same with yours, but it's worth a try.

Thanks Alan. How did you turn off the radio?

Wow! And you actually got the time to display, too. I know better than to try changing the screen on DH's Subaru, since he is the primary driver, or I'd be trying that soon.
