What are turkeys costing where you are?

We are in Florence, Oregon, and turkeys at Safeway are $1.79 a pound and at Fred Meyers, they are $1.99 a pound. What are they costing this year where you live? Thank heaven I have a turkey breast in the freezer. Don't think they will be any cheaper here.

At our local supermarket:
Frozen store brand, 59 cents a lb.; Butterball frozen, 99 cents
Fresh store brand, 99 cents a lb.; Butterball fresh, 1.69.

At our local poultry provider:
Fresh, organic, free-range): $4.19/lb
Fresh Red Bourbon, free-range, heirloom: $8,49.lb

Haven't priced them yet, as they are getting ready (again) for a buy a ham, get a turkey, sale. (not the biggest, but big enough for what we need)

$1.19 is the least amount I've seen (central Kansas). Prices may go lower when the sales ads come out tomorrow, but I would only expect prices to go lower by 10-cents per pound. I haven't seen turkey prices below $1.00/pound for years!

When it comes to buying a whole turkey, I like to keep this chart in mind in order to pay the lowest price per serving.... Not just per pound or per bird.

Whole Turkey - 12# or smaller = 1 (3-oz.) serving per pound
Whole Turkey - 12# or larger = 2 (3-oz.) servings per pound
Turkey - breast, bone-in = 2-3 (3-oz.) servings per pound
Turkey - breast, boneless = 3-4 (3-oz.) servings per pound

I use a math. equation to figure whether bone-in or boneless chicken breasts are cheaper per SERVING after you figure waste due to bone (although bones are never "wasted", they are used for making bone broth).
Example:
Boneless chicken breast - $2.99 / pound
Bone-in chicken breasts - $1.89 / pound
$1.89 X 1.5 (the amount of waste) = $2.83 per pound

.69/lb if you buy $50 in groceries or
Free if you buy $100 in groceries.

Gee, Meijer has a two day sale this week where if you buy 20 dollars of groceries, you can buy a turkey for 52 cents a pound. Guess we will be doing that.

And it is oh so easy to spend over $20. So much of our shopping is there. But we dont need a turkey. Got our stuffed Turkey roll at Costco this year.

A bit more than average, but we buy from the FHA kid down the road as his fund raiser. But they are already smoked and really delicious. Other than that, i think about $1.30 something is what I last saw, but that may come down as the holidays near.

I won't be eating turkey this Thanksgiving, I will be making a tofu dish with Moroccan spices and my partner will be making something Mexican, hopefully something with mole sauce. Due to the fact that I have had gout issues in the past, I can't eat turkey, which is one the the worst things I can eat to trigger a gout attack...something to do with something called purines in the turkey meat and how they break down builds up uric acid crystals which trigger gout outbreaks. It's too bad as even though I try very hard to be mostly vegetarian, I do like turkey. Those of you doing the traditional turkey dinner - enjoy it even more for me, lol. Rob

I have been releasing "wild" turkeys for 15 years here now in a 50+ acre patch of wetlands/forest. The marginal cost of a Thanksgiving turkey is the cost of a single 5.7x28mm cartridge. 2000 rounds for $800, so about $.0.40/turkey.

This year I bought 2 turkeys at Target for $.79 per lb. as gifts to take to Mexico (our Inn-owning friends there give them to needy local people as Christmas gifts), that's all the turkey that will pass through my hands this year. To the expectations for the great turkey bargain hunt, I say: Fly, be free!

I really don't like it much myself. We spent years raising 20 turkeys per year for the table on the farm. They were giant messy things and once I forgot to lock them up at night and they roosted on and ruined the paint job on one of the farm trucks. Pretty potent poo. I still raise chickens but I'd never do turkeys again.
I usually end up with a couple free ones every year. Always easy to find someone willing to take one. If I host Thanksgiving Dinner I usually make cornish hens. That way every plate has a tiny "turkey looking" chicken on their plate. Very festive and pretty.
