The Church of the Latter Day Dude (or Dudeism, if you're into the whole brevity thing) is a church based on a movie.
And Jeffrey Lebowski is it's Jesus.

Abide, y'all.

I would like to contribute to this thread, but sadly, I just can't relate to The Dude. I feel it's a personal failing.

I now realize my dabbling in dudeism in 1977 caused me to fail an important organic chemistry final in college and launched me into academic probation thus extending my college education an addition year much to the consternation of my parents. Faced with the realization that no matter how many all nighters I pulled I would never be able to diagram organic equations or understand basic chemistry theory, I unknowingly did what a good ordained dudist would do.......I played 18 holes of golf immediately before taking the final.
I should have had a clue that I was destined for more dudist glory when my older brother intercepted my Spring semester grades letter and opening it up exclaimed, "DUDE, YOU F'N FAILED !" After which I drove my Nova SS over to my friends house and played ping pong all night long while listening to a string of Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Peter Frampton and Boston LPs and drinking exceptionally foul Iron City Beer.
Now that I think of it, I may have unknowingly attended the largest concentration of dude pursuitists that Fall when I went to back to back Doobie Brothers and Grateful Dead concerts. I guess those 25 years in law enforcement I was a closet dude. But now I can feel free to rediscover all my dude tendencies. Thanks, think I will go to the local casino poker room and celebrate. Way cool Dude.

Just watched "The other One ...The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir." On Netflix. Very interesting look into the life of a true dude.
you can have an entire conversation with just the word dude, try it.
(I could get ordained in something!)
My big old cat is named Dude. He is definitely into Dudeism.
My exposure to the Dude occurred belatedly, when I was in such a non-Dude place I couldn't relate either. I've spent a long time not abiding very well, perhaps it's time to reconsider.

this Dude abides.
"that rug really tied the room together," used way too much when Dudes helped me move
The Dude is 67!!!

Never seen the movie, so I don't get so much of the meaning, but it made me look up something a friend joked about.
I was shocked to find out there are organizations to ordain atheists and agnostics.

It's mostly so fellow atheists can have formal wedding ceremonies and funerals without religious trappings and from a more rational rather than faith based perspective.
And some do it just for fun.
Recently, an atheist priest gave an invocation for a municipality's governing meeting, a first as anyone knows.
