We are talking about getting a pull behind trailer because we need to travel to relatives in various places and we need to be able to stay awhile and bring the dogs and cat.

Have been looking at various trailers on Craigslist and other places. I really like the little Casita Scamps (or the Bolers).

Has anyone tried this, a pull behind trailer like this and what do you recommend. We have a tow vehicle that can pull 7900 pounds.

I believe that both Casita travel trailers and Scamp travel trailers (two different brands) fall under the general idea of fiberglass travel trailers. If you google fiberglass travel trailers there will be a bunch of pictures and if you click the pictures in most cases that I saw it goes to a website, usually a blog. I recognized several of them from reading full time rv blogs. Some I'm a bit familiar with are:

I have thought about getting one to live in, but I don't have a tow vehicle, I always end up with something too small to tow even that small of a trailer.

Thanks, Paula, this will be the first time we have a tow vehicle to try this, so I am apprehensive, but they look good.

Oh brother, I was obsessed with these, the shortest ones (12?) last year. It's one of those things that caught my fancy and I camped out on eBay to look at them. Love them.

i like the vintage ones. There are currently ones being manufactured, too.

I thought this one was adorable, I could pull it with a 4 cylinder.

i know, aren't they cute? IL, I can see why you'd camp out on Ebay.

It's just the right size for two adults, two dogs, and a cat.

Over the past several years I've been considering light weight camper trailers capable of being towed by my motorcycle. There are several models that are small/light enough to be towed by just about any vehicle here: http://www.easyridercamper.com/Models.html

I will say that with a tow capacity of 7900 pounds you can pull something quite a bit bigger, if you want to. Not as cute, but possibly less expensive and more comfortable.

ETA: I don't know this company or their prices, or specifically recommend them, just an example of a layout that's a lot more convenient than turning your dining room into a bed every night.

Greg, the lightness intrigues me. I had not realized there was anything you could pull with a motorcycle. Kib, you are right, we could pull something heavier but I like the classice shapes-so would like a smaller Airstream if not the Scamp--I need to get my husband discussing the towing since he'll be driving it and not I. He used to drive a big rig so nothing scares him, but I'd like to get something little so that maybe someday I could get the nerve to drive it. But yeah, we could get something bigger, and I like what you linked, and had not thought about it.

Whatever we do it will be used to keep price down. But Kib, that thing is pretty inside, and it looks so "brand new" so nothing would need to be fixed. Maybe I ought to include these in the mix.

rodeosweetheart, that one is brand new. But a lot of people sell travel trailers that are very lightly used (it's a lot easier to find the boring squarish ones than the scamps and casitas), I looked at a 14' 2012 that was just lovely inside and they were asking $7,000 for it at a dealer. Almost considered trading the car so I could tow it, my tow capacity is about 1500 pounds and the one I was looking at was about 2600. I agree that the round ones are a lot cuter, but the older fiberglass trailers I've seen are all, uh, well worn, and the old bambi airstream ... sigh. The last one I saw, they wanted $26,000 for it. Now that one, I could love like a pet.

ETA: I've been passionate about finding a traveling house for a long time, and finally settled on a class B van. On the downside it's another vehicle to insure and maintain, but I really really like having everything under one roof when I travel. If I were going fulltime I think it would be different, I'd want a vehicle I could detach for day trips, but at the moment this fits my needs better.

I know, we go back and forth on the traveling house/pull along trailer--we looked at a couple of cool Minnie Winnie type of old trucks but they were SO old--then this Yukon came along that my husband decided on.

The other great thing about the Bambi or the 23 foot airstreams is that we could use it as a guest cottage. We were thinking of getting one to do Air Bn B with in SC, or maybe get one and leave it at my parents' so that all the kids and their dogs could come and have a place when they visit.

But we have kids in 3 different parts of the country, and it would be good to be able to throw the furry kids in the truck and go, if need be.

At one point we were going to buy a Tear Drop-cute, small, etc. Thank goodness we decided to lay down in one. It was like being in a coffin. Then some friends were selling their 27 ft motorhome with low miles-37,000 and low price because it was a 1993. There are some really good deals out there. It also was like new in the inside. Many people buy them and don't use them.

Would this replace your bigger RV?

No, I went over this here a while back, probably before your time. I'll be retiring in a couple of years and our plan is to spend a good portion of each year out in the motorhome. The small trailer I've been lusting after would be for those times we wanted to take off on the motorcycle for extended cross-country trips such as Yellowstone or Glacier National Park. My wife says she's up for the adventure as long as we can stay in a motel every 3rd or 4th day.

But what about a bathroom??

I'm not shy....and my wife isn't too averse to rest areas, plus all overnights would probably be in State or National Parks with the occasional private campground thrown in. The facilities at those places aren't luxurious, but they'll do.

Box stores and fast food joints also usually have clean safe bathrooms. Sometimes I buy something there, sometimes not, I figure one Whopper sandwich is good for about 10 toilet flushes. :~)

Well, I only think about it 'cause I have to go about 12 times a day. :( I guess there's always a chamber pot. :~)

Getting up to go in the middle of the night is a giant pain if you have to walk to the bathroom.

kib

Then again, not walking to the bathroom isn't really an option unless you wear Depends. ;)

JK, JK. Even when I tent camp I like to have the modern equivalent of a chamber pot (air and water tight, that is) so I don't have to go stumbling around outside in the dark. A laundry detergent bottle works pretty well.

I just don't want to imagine lots of people doing their business outside anywhere. Maybe it's because someone took a big c**p on our property a couple weeks ago....along with some bits of clothing to wipe with. Okay, I know, too much info.........But still....
But I do think those little campers are adorable, and very useful.

Ick. When I say stumbling around outside, I'm referring to walking to the camp bathroom.

I've camped in the wilderness on BLM areas. Husband and I drive the jeep to a place that looks nice. It's empty wilderness. We bring everything we need and take everything out with us. Except for the pee in the bushes and the poop buried under the ground.

:D

I don't mind cause there's nobody around for miles.

But I do like an outhouse better.

I don't like the teardrop trailers.

OTOH
I don't want a toilet in my tiny Scamp. Using campground and restaurant facilities for the most part would be my ideal with an occasional bucket job.

As as it is, in my urban environment I've resorted toma bucket when working in the gardens at our tiny houses. The houses provide privacy but no functioning plumbing.

This one should be tow-able by even the smallest car, as it is intended to be towed by bicycle. http://www.widepathcamper.com/wide-path-camper.html

Pretty cool idea! I just sent my brother that link. A few months ago, after retiring, he bought a HUGE RV and Ram truck to tow it. He spends a lot of time just leaving it at a campground and going tent camping. I told him he could have saved a lot of money by just buying this. haha

Do you have people walk through your property often? That would really bug me. I know down here a few years ago a property owner shot a guy who took a c**p on his property while on a canoe trip. The property owners along the rivers get pretty upset by people thinking they can walk, camp, throw trash, etc off river.

I still have dreams of restoring a vintage camper and like IL I'd probably take the bathroom out. Most of our state parks have really nice bath houses. I grew up going to a family cabin with no bathroom and have no problems using a bucket if needed. I'll never forget camping in the Smoky Mtns and leaving the tent late at night to go to the bath house and realized I was surrounded by bears.

Although adorable I personally don't think I'd want to be lugging an extra 45kg with me everywhere I went if I were doing the bicycle tourist thing. Especially with the added wind resistance. I suppose it'd be doable on flat ground but the hills would be a b*tch. What would be cool though would be to get one of these and tow it with an electric assist bicycle. One would still have to provide some of the effort to move it but not all. And with the solar power option you could be charging the battery(ies) as you moved, possibly extending your daily range, at least on sunny days.

I'd always assumed that only us city dwellers had to deal with this kind of crap, but apparently not.
