So, if you buy containers of spices, read the labels carefully, it might have added salt (or other forms of sodium), sugar, fillers or other less expensive spices. In some cases, it will have cellulose (wood pulp).
That's a good tip. If you buy spices online, they are a whole lot cheaper. But I like Watkins spices best--the cinnamon and pepper are amazing, and have spoiled me for anything else.
I either buy spices from a reputable place like Penzey's or go to an ethnic market where I can get something like 4 oz of cumin for $3.00. Who knows how long the spices have been sitting on the grocery store shelves.

We had a local hardware store/mower servicing place, that was known as the place to get fresh spices for years. Some I can still get fresh, others a bit fresher then grocery stores (food supply houses that a friends restaurant gave me access to as I have picked things up for them). But that is something I do miss.
Penzey's, Frontier, ethnic markets, Grocery Outlet, Cash and Carry, and Amazon for my spices--all much better and cheaper than grocery store prices.
There is a spice store near me, I can get refills for my glass containers. And the spices are much more fresh and varied than the regular store jars. It is worth it because I cook more at home with good spices.
