I got to thinking about the dining nook and remembered these rooms that have the feel I'm looking for. They don't have pedestal tables, but the dining area in her house is bigger than mine and I think a pedestal would be more functional.

And this is my kitchen inspiration! This Fall I have plans to paint my kitchen and get rid of a lot of stuff to achieve this sort of bright cheerful space.

I like the look of this table/chair combo. I saw chairs very similar at auction. They had a hot pink cushion cover and looked fabulous. Very glam but simple. And it would be so easy to change out the covers. Or I can do just two bigger upholstered chairs. That would be nice too.

I like the color of the kitchen cabinets in the link.
I have a large trove of decorating ideas in a computer file. To drool over, if nothing else.

I didn't know she used to be a member of the Forum. I like her blog.

I stumbled onto this blog and her dining nook is very similar to mine. And she's using a table that looks just like the Ikea one I've been thinking of using. I wish I could copy/past the photo, but no luck. https://www.instagram.com/p/BV0Ofz8FJJa/?taken-by=most_lovely_things

Geila, those pictures are totally, totally my style. Beautiful! When I made some changes to my kitchen I built a banquette out of stock cabinets in my kitchen nook, but didn't replace our old vintage farm table, which I LOVE. My living area also is similar to the bottom picture (not quite that nice, but same idea!) with parson's chairs and very little/no color--just white/beige and natural woods, including the wooden blinds and jute rug.

My living room cost me maybe $700 to decorate, which includes the "built-in" bookcase, deacon's bench, expandable dining table, piano, re-covered parson's chairs, loveseat, secretary, and wall art. Everything was free or bought in consignment shops.

I really like that one and looks similar to what I'd like to do in my kitchen eating area. I've thought about a built in bench across the long wall with small table and chairs. Very calming photo with the black and white. I think I have too much color in my kitchen now and would like to brighten it with some white paint. I have two red walls, the other's are a dark taupe. My galley off the eating area I have the lower cabinets in teal and the uppers in white (some open), I have black/stainless appliances. There is a covered porch off the sliding door facing SW same wall as kitchen sink window. The window on the long wall in the eating area is facing SE but has a walkway and the studio blocks some of the light. I'm just feeling dark and closed in. Love all these light and airy feeling samples you posted.

Wasn't there talk of a pedestal table on another thread? I just saw this one in a Sturbridge Yankee Workshop catalog.

$700?! That's amazing. And this look is so classic. I had to look up parson's chairs and I like them. I just saw two of them at Ross today. $60 each, seemed like a good price. They would look good with the Docksa!

I have a lot of color in mine too. I have a long wall and a partial one in bright yellow and then I have lots of accents in red and turquoise. I have all open shelving in the kitchen too. Lately I'm wanting to have a more peaceful and simple space. I think we all enjoy a little change sometimes. I've had the kitchen like this for 10 years and now I'm leaning towards some soft sage mint colors. And less stuff on the shelves!

Yes, pedestals seem to work well in small spaces, especially at softening the hard corners. That table you posted is very pretty. And I like the visual weight of it. I think it would work well in my space. And it seems easy to move. One reason a like the Docksta so much is that it will be easy to vacuum and mop around it! No feet! It's such a hassle to move chairs and stools out of the way to clean.

How do you like the bench you created from stock cabinets? They look great but I wonder about how comfortable they are to actually sit on on a regular basis to eat meals. I've been making it a daily habit to eat all of my meals at the table and just gaze out the window - no computer, no books, just mindfulness. So I want a place that will be comfy and pretty.

The table in the first picture has a feature that the pedestal table doesn't. You can fold it up and move it when you need space.
There are a few pedestal style tables (I think mostly colonial), that offer similar (top folds to the side). There are times that might be useful, something to consider.

Three years ago, we went from a tiny maple table that sat four to a larger mahogany set that seats six and has a leaf to expand. Within six months, my son and his family moved out. Now that we are just two most of the time, I've actually considered a smaller table. The dark table, like someone stated upthread, is so weighty... I have a desire for more lightness... The bad thing is we only have the one eating space, so I need to keep the big family table as neither of the kids can accommodate a sizeable bunch for meals.

I find it to be comfy enough, but I haven't gotten the cushions yet!! If you have a cushion and a cushion and pillows on the seat back, it can be much more comfortable than a kitchen chair. And so flexible when people come over. No scrounging for extra chairs.

Here's what I envision once I get around to getting the cushions (they can be expensive, and I keep saying I'm going to make them myself).

BTW, I had a handman install the stock cabinets, and then I had that seat overlay measured for my comfort. I'm a short person (my whole family is short, including DH), so I didn't want my feet to dangle, but I didn't want to feel like I was "perching" either. The handyman also was able to match the moulding at the floor to the kitchen moulding so it looked more "custom."

I really like your nook Catherine. The windows, the rounded corners on your bench, the beautiful farm table.

I actually have a perfect spot for a bench. My area is an L-shape. I used to have a tiny kitchen with a decent dining area. We took down 2 walls and made our galley kitchen into an L with an island and extended the cabinets into the dining area space. So now we have a decent kitchen and a tiny eating area. Well, the space is awkward because of the layout. The bench might make the awkward space feel better. DH is actually really handy with carpentry and I bet he could build me something.

Do you use your cabinets for storage? If so, how do you access, does the top lift up? I didn't notice any drawers.

JoAnn Fabrics has the cushion material that you can have cut to size in different thickness. You could just wrap the cushion in a fabric and either pin or or velcro it underneath. (Says the woman who bought all the stuff to do this for the outdoor bench and hasn't done it yet, 3 years later.)

What height did you end up with on the bench?

Yes, I definitely use the space for storage, but I only use it for things I rarely use. Being cabinets, the doors swing out, which means I have to pull the table out to get to the stuff. But since I don't have much storage space in my kitchen, it's a great bonus to have that space for the seldom-used kitchen gadgets or serving pieces that don't fit well anywhere else.

The height from the floor is 19" and the seat depth is 17". There are a lot of DIY instructions on the internet for how to use stock cabinets. Here's one. http://supernovawife.com/2014/03/diy-kitchen-seating-banquette-bench-ikea-cabinets/

We have a JoAnn's near me, so maybe I'll check it out! I'd love to get those cushions done.

Thanks for the link, Catherine! We actually have the same Ikea kitchen cabs as they do (I'm so proud of DH that he put them all together and installed them) and used to have the same floor that they did too.

Since I don't need extra storage and I'm claustrophobic, I was looking for ideas on how to achieve the benefits of the bench without the weight of the cabinets. I found these settee ideas and I quite like it. And I could probably find a nice settee at auction. I had to force myself to stop looking and pasting. There are so many cute pics out there!

This last one is not a settee, but I like how they did the storage in a way that doesn't make the place feel cramped. I have a wall space on one side of my nook that this could work. I especially like the open storage.

Beautiful pics--and I love the settee idea!

The pedestal table would probably be pretty easy to find at a yard sale or consignment shop and ready-to-paint a nice white!

I've been looking for a pedestal table on the secondary market for years without luck. Pottery Barn has them for $600. Penney's has an unpainted one for $565 and a white one for $675. I've never seen one at auction. I've never seen a decent one on Craig's list/yard sale/thrift store either. I haven't shopped consignment stores but I don't think we have many of those around. I don't know of any.

Really? Shoot. I think oak ones were very popular about 30 years ago. You'd think a couple would show up somewhere.

ETA: What size were you looking for, and what budget? I see there are several on my area's craigslist, but they're all around $150-$250.

The oak ones are usually too big. I'm looking for 42" diameter or smaller. I just saw a nice one on craigslist - really pretty base. I would need to refinish it (espresso color and scratched top), it's bigger than I'd like at 48" diameter and $200. Another one is 54" and $900 (too big, too dark). And a lovely little Stickley for $1200 (very nice!). :) The Ikea is 41.5" diameter, the right color, and $179. I know that it's plastic, but if it works... :)

And now I'm off to swim at the new gym! I'm excited and nervous to be in public in a bathing suit.

Despite it being a lovely day here, the LV events have me feeling down and sad. I don't want to let these feelings take hold though. SAD season is hard enough already. I'm trying to take my mind off of them by thinking about the painting projects I'd like to do.

I saw this on Design Sponge this morning and liked it - very pretty home but functional too. And enough space around the stuff that it feels airy:http://www.designsponge.com/2017/10/an-interior-designers-fresh-start-in-west-hollywood-ca.html

Rather than starting a new home decorating thread, I just dragged this one back up.

Ha! I love the "giant prop closet" 1957

Seriously that dining table and chairs were cool and I loved the use of navy in the living room. I so miss my navy sofa that did not survive the early child-rearing years. I'm on the hunt for a navy sofa again.

WE also need a new sofa but we have a 12 yo -80lb shedding machine ( awesome dog)! So will not replace until he dies.

This is what that blue sofa looked like before he reupholstered it - gotta say, I didn't think the scalloped look was bad though:

Now if I could just work that same magic on my dog-mauled couch...

Another thing I've noticed is that apartment photos are better for me because they have room proportions closer to my house's. It's hard for me to visualize stuff when the rooms pictured are twice the size of what I have.

Geila, I got a stretchy slipcover at Ollies for the chair that was ugly, but in decent shape. I am very pleased with it. My husband sits in the chair all the time and it doesn't slip around and have to be rearranged constantly. The texture is not bad and for less than 20 dollars it made a huge difference in the room. I had looked into having it reupholstered, couldn't find anything I liked and it would have cost over 800 dollars. I can buy a lot of Ollies covers for that! (Ollies is an overstock place like Big Lots etc. if you don't have them around you.) It's washable, too.
