View Full Version : Alan, is this the first day of the rest of your life?
Alan,
I think today is the beginning of your retirement, and I wanted to say congratulations. Sorry if I have it wrong!
That's correct. This is actually the last day of a long career and it looks like it's going to be an all day party at work. I'm not sure if the celebrations are for me or for them though.
Thanks for the good thoughts.
Huzzah, huzzah! (Insert airhorn sounds and a brass band here.)
Congratulations! Have a great day, Alan!
The day has arrived! Enjoy.

Alan, good for you!
Ditto, and we know you'll be enjoying every day.
And I don't know if you're signed up with a pension but I was just mentioning to someone the miracle of having MegaCorp. deposit $ in my checking account on the first of every month even though I officially left work 15 months ago - a nice reminder of the benefits of a successful career!

Congratulations! We have small pensions and are very grateful for them.
Hey! Congratulations, Alan! Enjoy the journey ahead! The future is wide open!
Alan: Congrats to you on this glorious day! Enjoy your retirement!
I've been retired now for 3 hours. So far, so good!

It takes a while to sink in. What do you plan to do first? Besides taking ZG’s nap for her:))

Well, I'm starting retirement with a bang.....fasting tomorrow and beginning prep for a Friday morning colonoscopy. So, living large right out of the gate!

That is terrible! Hope some fun things are planned for next week.
Ooooh, eww, well better than cutting your retirement short by not having the test done.
Congratulations, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
The retirement, not the other thing.
It's been rainy and cooler this past week or so but sunshine and mid 80's are in the forecast for next week, that means floating in the pool in between naps.
My wife starts back to school on the 10th, so that doesn't leave us any time to go out vagabonding till her Christmas break, but next summer....we're hitting the road big time!
In the meantime, I've re-strung my guitar after not touching it for a few years so I'll probably spend part of each day over the next several weeks building up the calluses on my fingertips. I've been meaning to build a new fileserver so I'll probably start that after she's back in school and late summer/early fall are the perfect times for cruising the back roads on the motorcycle. The 2000 Sq Ft of finished basement space which the grandkids have destroyed over the past couple of years is in need of a makeover so that will get me through the winter. I have nearly 5000 unread e-books calling my name and I just found a new recipe for chicken/sausage/shrimp jambalaya which I think could use some perfecting.
Once I get fully immersed in doing what I want, when I want, I'm afraid there may not be enough hours in each day.
My parents have been retired a few years and said they don't know how they had time to work!
Alan--5000 ebooks?!!
I feel like a kind of a hoarder, but I have fewer than a thousand.
We are obviously set for long, long lives of enjoyable reading.
After the day I had today all I can say is I'M JEALOUS! Enjoy!
Alan--5000 ebooks?!!
Those are the unread ones, the total is more like 5600 & change. I don't consider it hoarding as long as they don't take up physical space.

May you have a long and healthy retirement. And one where you find no new books that you want to read. At my current rate, expanded if I had the additional time in my life from not working, that amount of books would still take me about 33 years to read...
Congrats. I am two years in and still pinch myself that I am retired.
Enjoy! Again not the colonspocy or the prep but, enjoy your retirement.
I thought I would not! But, oh boy was I wrong I love mostly doing just what I want.

Looks like you have plenty to keep you busy. Even though I work about 10 hours/week from home I have plenty of time to do what I want. It is nice to start on a big project and not have to quit for work. I love to attack something until it’s done versus working in small chunks. Just my personality.
I get giddy over others’ retirements because I know how wonderful it will be. I relive my last day at work and still think it was the best day of my ‘working-out-of-the-home-for-money' career. Congratulations.

Indeed. I have heard so many retirees mention how much busier they are now than they were when they were working. I suspect not having a 50-60 hour per week occupation on their schedule has something to do with that. :)

Congratulations!
Coming in late to this party, but congratulations, Alan! Motorcycles, books, good food, some cool home projects, music...the ideal retirement!

Retirement almost makes aging worthwhile--the world is now officially your oyster!
