A friend of mine was responding to my mockery of Corey Booker by accurately claiming “he never said that”. That, and a recent Jonah Goldberg piece got us talking about things “everybody knows” someone said which they really didn’t. Things like:

Beam me up, Scotty.

I can see Russia from my house.

Here’s looking at you, kid.

I invented the internet.

We got to discussing if there is a word to describe that sort of popular misapprehension or if we needed to make one up. Siri was no help at all, and the bartender refused to get involved. Does anyone know?

In any event, we agreed hecklers will be shouting “No, I’m Spartacus!” at Senator Booker to the end of his days. He could solve global warming or win the Third World War single-handedly, but they’ll still do it.

There's a thing called The Mandela Effect - is that what you mean?

Here's looking at you, kid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEWaqUVac3M) was in fact said in Casablanca. What was never said was "Play it again, Sam."

I can see Russia from my house (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noSw5iZ8fLA) was never said by Sarah Palin, but as part of a SNL skit by Tiny Fey (admittedly it's hard to tell the difference). So it doesn't count.

I'm not sure about the other two.

I think you’ve got it! The bartender will be very impressed.

You’re right about the Bogey quote. I think Woody Allen started that one.

Someone recently told me Judy Garland never said “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore”.

Not those exact words, but pretty close (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N77NaxlGlU).

I had the chance to talk with him this summer, and found him quite engaging and intelligent. Not crazy at all.

I like him and admire some of the things he has spoken out about. My friend and I just noticed that sometimes he looks intense.

Corey Booker made his mark further gutting patronage ridden inner city schools of funds for education, as opposed to administration, diverting those moneys to charter schools.
