View Full Version : What kind of mustard do you prefer?
I really dislike the basic yellow mustard served everywhere. I make some homemade mustard and also have Dijon mustard on hand. I use these on everything that can be enhanced with mustard and have for years.
However, both dear sons-in-law really prefer the plain basic mustard. It usually expires pastits BB date so gets tossed. I just bought another container for $1 so were not talking about a great expense.
It got me wondering about the general preference for mustard.
Yellow or Dijon or ? at your house?

I don't like mustard. I do use a little Dijon in my three bean soup recipe, though.

I love Dijon. It's great for jazzing up things like potato salads and for general purpose.
Because I am a HUGE Ian Richardson fan, I have to attach this classic mustard commercial.

There is nothing like yellow mustard on a burger, none of the fancy mustards compare. Open face burger with good meat (ideally cooked on the grill), on sourdough bread slice, with onions and mustard and nothing else. That's having it my way :)
But I don't really use yellow mustard otherwise, although the simple ones don't have any weird ingredients, nothing unhealthy about them. Dijon I use more but mostly in recipes, in salad dressing and other recipes. I guess I don't eat mustard otherwise as I rarely eat sandwiches except when I'm at a cafe/deli sometimes. Any of them are good on a grilled cheese though!

I love good mustard; it is my condiment of choice. I once counted 7 types of mustard in our refrigerator, but we have streamlined since then. My current favorite is Raye's Brown Ginger mustard, made in Maine.
Stonewall Kitchen has some good ones, but the prices are crazy and I found I liked Raye's better. My husband could tell you about the time we had to drive to Maine because I needed mustard. :)
If I was confined to local grocery stores, I would either buy Honeycup mustard (which was my gateway drug to mustard deliciousness), and Trader Joe's also has a good one - I think it's dijon.

I hate mustard.
My two favorites are Grey Poupon dijon and Goulden's spicy brown.
I like all mustards (especially spicy Chinese), but only on certain things. I'm not a fan of mustard on hamburgers.

If I forget to ask for the Chinese mustard when I do take-out, I get so angry with myself! Egg rolls and spring rolls are nothing without it!!

I regularly buy Chinese-style BBQ pork, which comes packaged with hot mustard and sesame seeds, which I then hoard and use with a sambal oelek/ketchup dipping sauce.
ETA: I checked Amazon, and you can buy Chinese mustard packets--not the environmentally friendliest packaging-wise, but available.
I use yellow mustard on hamburgers, hot dogs and as the base rub on smoked meats, everything else is spicy brown and Dijon......depending...

If asked about my passions in life, it probably would not occur to me to mention mustard or my salad spinner, but they clearly belong on the list. :laff:
I use a pinch of Dijon to make salad dressing. I also keep a jar of good honey mustard for infrequent ham sandwiches.

For dipping pretzel sticks, honey mustard. The best honey mustard is that which is received as a gift from a son, or failing that, a gift from any admirer.
For sandwiches, I like Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard, which I buy when it is on sale for 50 cents for a 12 oz. container. Ingredients: mustard seeds, vinegar, salt and turmeric.
In potato salad, I like Dijon. I am not partial to any specific brand of Dijon.
I like all mustards (especially spicy Chinese), but only on certain things. I'm not a fan of mustard on hamburgers.Same here, there's nothing more disappointing to me than anticipating a burger and having that overwhelming flavor hit me in the mouth instead! I have to say yellow mustard is the one I really don't care for very much, too vinegary, maybe? And I really like honey mustard (our local honey store produces one that's wonderful.)
Gulden's spicy brown and Inglehoffer Sweet Hot. Dijon for salad dressings.

Colman’s English mustard (I prefer to buy it in powder form, but it’s readily available in tubes and jars). It’s HOT. I remember a cousin and his wife visiting from the US and, despite warnings, liberally slathered his roast beef sandwich. It only needs a smear.... it nearly blew his head off, eyes streaming, the whole works!
I also like Tracklement Seeded Mustard and real French Dijon, especially the smooth Dijon with Horseradish.
I've been to the Colman's Mustard Museum in Norwich! That is the mustard we used to buy in tins when I was little.
I prefer a spicy or brown mustard. DH devours the bright yellow stuff.

Yes -- but it's not hard to make your own with powdered mustard seed and water.
Yellow mustard is OK on a hot dog or a corn dog when I want that bright bite to counteract the fattiness of the sausage. But I'm not a fan of it much of anywhere else.
However, I recently discovered a hickory-smoked mustard from French's that I think I could eat by the spoonful. I bought the first jar since it was "different" (I'll try almost anything once) and it disappeared quickly. Hard to find locally, though -- I've tried five supermarkets now (indy or different chains) and only one of them carries it (in fact, I'm a little surprised at how infrequently I find French's mustard at all at other stores).

I ran out of my preferred Raye's mustard at the height of the spring pandemic, so I mail-ordered about $65.00 worth of mustard from them, you know, so I could get the free shipping, lol. We also donated $10. to their mustard museum fund. We actually really enjoyed the mustard sampler pack we got. This and other transactions may help to explain why I haven't been as active on the Frugals threads this year. :)

Salad Spinner! Seriously you really want to go there?! You can always tell an older timer to the list when the spinner word gets tossed around! :laff:
Just plain ole' American Yellow Mustard for me. Oh, I will eat the others, but big yellow squeeze bottle is just fine! :0!

It looks like you can buy it six jars at a time from Amazon.
I like most mustards, but don't use them often.

It looks pretty reasonable, too.
I have an unreasonable love of Amazon; they've come through for me often, and they're a lifetime these days.
