The Birdhouse bar in Bird, Alaska - halfway between Anchorage and Girdwood - was there when you were stationed in Alaska but burnt down in the late 1990's. It's been rebuilt (complete with skanky panties and bras) inside Chilkoots Charlies and is now more of a tourist attraction. Might be a fun place to visit if you and your wife go to Alaska this summer. The original was a tiny shack with only one door and one window - glassless with just a shutter - and covered with decades old undies, various I.D. cards (including an old library card of mine - no undies :-)!) - and license plates. Too bad it's gone now as it was a real icon.

Also, if you are driving upthe Alaska Hwy, you might want to pick up a copy of the "Alaska Milepost" which is a book that lists what there is at each milepost along the Hwy. It was invaluable when I drove up there in 1991 but now with the internet you may not need it as much. http://www.milepost.com/home

Guess this should have been posted in the travel section. OOPS!

Thanks for the info. We won't be making that trip this year, probably in about five.
I think I've still got several Milepost's from the 70's. At that time they were invaluable for anyone making the drive.

I'm looking forward to doing it, I've even heard that the highway is paved now. WooHoo!

Paved roads??? Oh you mean those half dirt, half rock, muddy ruts that run for hundreds of miles. Yeah, they have paved roads now :-) Actually the roads are good in summer but get a lot of frost heave in winter and then come the endless repairs in the late spring that really slow down the traffic.
