View Full Version : Colonoscopies
I had my first one five years ago so it's time for my second one on Monday. I agreed to the 7:30 appointment so I could get it done and get on with my life without too much fuss. But today I read the instructions for the "prep" and apparently there's a new formulation or at least new protocol. Last time it was one batch of the nasty drink followed by a ton of water and not eating anything for 24 hours before. This time the not eating anything part isn't there, but it's a two stage process. One batch of the nasty drink the evening before the procedure and a second batch 5 hours before the procedure. So I now have to get up at 2:30 AM monday and drink the stuff and then 2 glasses of water, presumably followed by several trips to the bathroom. I wish they had mentioned this when I scheduled the appointment. Now I will be ready to come home and take a long nap after the procedure which kind of defeats the point of an early appointment. Bother.
I suppose I shouldn't complain though. I'm glad to be able to get screened and if necessary deal with any concerns that are found.

I’ve only had one and the preparation was somehow more than drinking two batches of the stuff if I remember right.
DH says the first time he had it it was drink one batch. The second time he had it it was this new procedure of drinking multiples, too. He doesn’t like the new one.
Colonoscopies are no big deal, but man that prep sucks!

I don’t remember the details but when SO did his a year ago it was a more complicated prep. He had two or theree different things he had to do. Maybe yours was like his.

I think mine was like yours--2 drinks, and I did have to get up in the middle of the night to drink the second one. It truly is awful.

Okay----What I'd like to know---and maybe this would be a good topic for daytime TV---is when does a medical school student make a conscious decision to make proctology their specialty? I do not know. But yeah---you kids prolly aren't even old enough to remember thatt the late Johnny Carson frequently made proctologists/proctology the butt of his jokes. Ha. Get it? Oh, well--see, he was originally from Western Iwah, where having an Earthy sense of humor is characteristic. Yup. Hope that helps you some. 5217
I can remember a proctologist related video I saw on a porn site one time. It was about a 20-something gay man who had figured out that he liked being proctored and his doctor helped him learn that this was ok. It seemed to help him so I help that helps you too!!!

They keep changing the protocol. I have had 3 in the last 18 years. The drink is actually improving. The big decision is that as you age your lining thins and becomes easier to perforate which usually results in sepsis and death. So deciding when to have your last one is the big decision. Following doctor’s orders is not my forte.
I opted to do the Cologard test and skip any colonoscopies.
Well, I can verify that I'm all clean inside and out at the moment. Hopefully the doc won't find any unpleasant surprises today.
Oh, and since I had to be up for the last 2 1/2 hours I've managed to get my taxes done between trips to the bathroom! Multitasking!

After drinking the crap and doing taxes, I would feel extremely virtuous!

All I feel is a desire to make a big breakfast and go back to bed.
Only one polyp this time, compared to five last time. Hopefully pathology will say it’s not a concern.
