In a matter of months I expect Mama Gnocchi and I will relocate to Winter, WI. We have spent a good part of every summer in that vicinity for several years.
I thought I would let this be known, in case this group might contain anyone from the area. We are friendly retirees, content to live with neither snowmobile nor atv.
If you are live or vacation in the area, I would love to hear from you.

dado....another move! It sounds like a great idea and I wish I were near there because I would love to have you and Mama over for a cup of tea. Of course you are moving further away from my current location.
We spend a week each summer near Hayward at our friends' cabin. It's a lovely area!
My uncle has a cabin near Rice Lake, I believe and DH's godfather has a cabin in Hayward. I agree with Rosemary, it's a lovely area.
I used to spend many summer vacations in Rice Lake as my great grandmother lived there when I was a child. I remember the area fondly.

Will you change your name back to WisconsinBadger? I grew up a few towns due north of Park Falls.

Early in September we are going back to look again. ... Not only in Winter, but in Hayward, and maybe along Hwy B (between the two.) It has been a learning experience: Mama and I each are learning more about what we desire/fear (buyer's remorse) in a habitation. We are viewing this home as our "last stop", and so are perhaps more intransigent than usual.

Can you outline generally what you are looking for and avoiding in habitation? We are tempted to move out of the snow belt sometimes but we love our social network, our neighborhood, and our lifestyle although we are far from our kids. And sometimes the weather gets to us.
I visited the area you are planning on moving to and it is indeed beautiful. Good luck.

The merged list of what we want and wish to avoid runs to about 5 pages. We have given the matter a good airing.
This area would be about 200 miles north of grand-daughter, age 2... and the possibility of other grand-kids in the fullness of time. (Grampa's Dividend!) I have been actively fantasizing that the house needs to have a "little girl's" bedroom, as well as a guestroom for Mum&Dad.
We have spent more than 50 winters up-north, so winter is not an unknown. In fact, I want to get back into Xcountry skiing and ice fishing. We are dithering right now between boondocks (3-20 miles from the nearest post office) and Hayward. One pull is the self-reliance and solitude... except when the bear hunters come through after their dogs! Mama gets a spiritual euphoria in the forest. On the opposite pole is the availability of services in a place like Hayward.
