I've just listened to a feature on BBC Radio about Major Winter, who has recently died at the age of 92. I was completely unaware of the role Major Winter played in the Normandy Landings in 1944. His personal heroism together with amazing intelligence resulted in there being only(!) 200 dead on Utah beach rather than the many thousands on Omaha. A remarkable and yet modest man.

Without Americans of this calibre I would be typing this post in German.

Anyone unfamiliar with Major Winters should see the HBO series "Band of Brothers". (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185906/)

Yeah, I thought the subject line was a sign that we could be more liberal with our language on this new forum!;)

As Oscar Wilde put it "We are two nations divided by a common language"
