Do you have one in your home? Pros/cons?

Would really love to hear from those who do. DH is finishing up a few last minute things related to my laundry room (my brand new, remodeled laundry room), and asked me if I'd like to have a laundry chute put in. I was ecstatic! "Yes", I replied, followed by, "are you crazy, I'd love a laundry chute"!!!

One-story house, here. My aunt had a laundry chute when we were growing up, and the favorite form of torture among the cousins was to throw each other's best-loved toys down the laundry chute. Fun times!

You should get not only a laundry chute, but a laundry elevator, to carry the folded clothes up when you are done. Like a laundry dumb-waiter.

Yes, I would l love one! My knees have arthritis, and schlepping the laundry up & down stairs is really hard.

Not this home but another home we installed one. Excellent to have.

Love mine. Mine is in the 2nd floor bathroom, a cutout in the floor with a vanity over it. The only downside is finding a replacement for this cheap low end vanity: the nice ones don't go all the way to the floor so what would I do with that gaping hole? I could cover it up with flooring, but I really like the convenience of the chute. It would be even more convenient had they installed the washing machine on the same side of the basement as the chute.

A baby of a friend of mine fell down the laundry chute. She was fine but that sure soured my like of laundry cutes.

We had one growing up that was in the bathroom closet and went to the basement. I would hate having to go to the basement to do laundry now! I'm so glad we live on one floor now.
That laundry shoot growing up wasn't covered. It was a pretty scary thing.....looking down into that dark basement!!

I've got one. It's called the basement stairs. I stand at the top and pitch the clothes to the hallway at the bottom! ;)

Single story house -- our washer/dryer are in the garage. Okay so I sometimes stand at the garage door, wad up the item and toss it across the garage. If it lands in the general area I am pleased. No points if it lands on dw's car hood! :laff:

We have one in our trailer ... a "hole" with a lid in the bedroom, and dirty clothes drop into a basket in the "basement". Works fine. Don't have to keep dirty clothes in the bathroom and easy to carry the basket to laundry facilities. Don't have one at home, tho, in our single-story house.

We have one but it is in the bathroom off the kitchen for some odd reason. Since we don't change our clothes in the kitchen it's use is limited to kitchen towels. I'd love it if it was off of the bathroom by the kid's rooms. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they placed it. Still, it's better than my friend's who's laundry chute is in the closet by the front door. That would be an awkward place to change. :)

Haven't ever had one, but I think my brother does in his house. Does seem like a nice little touch if it works for your house. And I love the idea of a laundry elevator! In our apartment in NYC we had a dumbwaiter. Every night at 6:00 the super would send it up and we'd all put our garbage in as it came down from the upper floors. It was such a fun, convenient old touch and something I loved about living in an older building. The fact that we had to go through five sets of doors/gates and four flights of stairs to get down to the laundry room? Not so much. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to use the dumbwaiter for laundry. That would have been nice, though I guess you don't really want your clean clothes coming up in the same thing the garbage went down in....

We had one in the house I grew up in (just a one story) in the bathroom. I used to love to try to plunk my mom in the head with dirty laundry (especially wet towels) if she was down in the basement sorting laundry, right under the chute. Heh heh!

Oooh Lhamo that's what I want, a dumbwaiter! My house is split into 6 levels. I think it would be a useful thing here.

Thanks you guys!

Maribeth. The laundry dumbwaiter is genius! Wish we had the means of affording such a luxury! I'd definitely have one!!! :)

Redfox. I'm finding the older I get, the less enthused I am getting about doing the whole up and down thing. (I may have to adopt, Nella's idea)! :laff:

Ctg492. I'm so sold on it, too.

Herbgeek. DH is going to cut a hole in the wall (back of bathroom vanity/counter) and make it so that there's a pull-open (drop-down) door, like the old flour drawers in kitchens. That way if we ever decide on upgrading our upstairs bathroom, the laundry chute opening will always be covered.

Libby. That is so scary! So glad the baby didn't get hurt.

CathyA. I find myself dreaming of a ranch-styled home more and more all the time. Would love everything all on one level. Re: looking down into the dark basement by way of a laundry chute, as a kid, a neighbourhood friend of mine lived in a home with a chute, and I never failed to open the door of that chute to take a look whenever I visited! :) I definitely had a fascination for chutes back then! :laff: Still love 'em to this day!

Nella. It's a good thing I never posted this thread a couple of years ago, because I would have adopted it!!! :laff:

Greg44. I should have guessed! :laff: That sly grin of yours tells on you! :)

Serendipity. I like it!

Stella. LMAO! I agree.

Lhamo. Great story! :) Dumbwaiters (as I know them) were always reserved for the rich who lived in mansions. In fact I remember watching an old movie as a kid were someone climbed into one and took a ride from floor to floor! Hmmm... glad we never had one when the boys were little!

Tradd. That is hilarious! The fun things kids do...

We have one in our house, with doors in the second floor hallway and the first floor hallway, and the laundry ends up in a big built in cabinet in the basement. I love it; I can't imagine having to store and lug dirty clothes. It's also useful for talking to each other when somebody is in the basement and somebody is on the second floor; you can just holler into the laundry chute.

Oh, wow!!! A double-floored chute! Totally awesome, Kathy WI! I was thinking (after reading CathyA's entry) what a great horror movie a laundry chute would make for. Spotting/hearing some spook in your basement late at night, then making eye contact with him/her.
