I have long admired the graphic novels and comics of Harvey Pekar. This is a really interesting look at his life.
....and Paul Giamatti is amazing. Husband and I enjoyed this very much, and we're not even big Harvey Pekar fans.

I wasn't a Harvey Pekar fan before watching that film (I mean, I barely knew who he was), but that didn't matter; I loved that movie. And yes, Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis were amazing.

I, too, knew nothing about Harvey Pekar until I heard him interviewed on "Fresh Air" by Terri Gross. I saw the movie and loved it. Recently, I went to NPR's website and listened to another interview Gross did with Pekar before he died. One interesting thing about Pekar I learned is that he used to get into lots of fistfights as a child because he was relentlessly bullied at school, but he actually ended up being quite strong and a good fighter.
American Splendor is one of my favorite movies! I love the way it was done, combining live acting, animation, and interviews. I had never heard of Harvey Pekar before I saw this movie, but it piqued my interest in his graphic novels/comics. I found Our Cancer Year at the public library, and I found it to be an emotionally riveting story. I hope to read more of Harvey Pekar's work in the future, if I can find it.
I loved the movie and the comix.
Joyce Brabner and Pekar wrote "Our Cancer Year (http://www.amazon.com/Our-Cancer-Year-Harvey-Pekar/dp/1568580118)". That should be recommended reading for anyone who has to face a long term illness and somehow recover.
I also thought Our Cancer Year was spectacular.
