What vegetable plants fare best when planted by other vegetable plants?

I used to like to talk to older people about gardening, they had some good ideas, but just wondering -- what vegetables planted next to what vegetable gives the best results?

I heard that basil is best planted with tomatoes that it will enhance the tomato flavor.
