View Full Version : Storm in the Northeast....Anyone Preparing?
Some computer models and forcasters (http://news.yahoo.com/hybrid-sandy-winter-storm-threatens-east-coast-064040714.html)are saying the combination of Hurricane Sandy and the big cold front moving across the country could significantly impact the Northeast by the first part of the week. Just wondering if this is making news on the east coast yet and if anyone is doing anything to prepare?
The cold front came through here yesterday. We were just ahead of it most of the day, but close enough to push clouds and fog on us so our high was 54*. A town 40 miles away had a high of 82*. It was very strange. Last night we had a few fairly heavy thunderstorms and today we're only supposed to be 38* and the north wind is howling! Yuck. How long till spring?

Time to put the winter tires on the cars. *sigh*
I was just reading the weather forecast and thinking that I should make a run to the grocery store and fill the car with gas before the weekend just to be on the safe side.

It's still technically hurricane season here in New England. I checked all the storm supplies at the end of August and haven't used them in the interval, so I think we are good to go.
In addition to the two storms meeting up, there will be a full moon, which means tides along the coast will be at their highest. That's bad news for people who live there.
Last year, we had the freak early snow storm that took out power in parts of town for four days. Now this "mega-storm."
It's a little funny--the newscasters here are just saying that we'll get a lot of rain on Tuesday. It's newscasters elsewhere in the US that are hyping up this storm. I've heard more about it from far-flung friends than from the people here in town.
There's still time for it to turn out to sea. If everyone wishes really hard . . . .
Heck, I'm in the NW, and the news prompted me to get myself in gear for winter storm preparations.
Just knowing the temp here was dropping from 80 today to the low 50's tomorrow got me in gear a bit yesterday. Its really hard to get motivated for winter when its in the 70's!
Good luck to all of you on the east coast.

Hurricane season tends to blend into blizzard season, but fortunately the preparations are basically the same, except for winterizing the car.
Now, the earthquake we had last week--that I was not prepared for At All.
I live in Central VA. The storm is supposed to hit the Delmarva Peninsula. I hope it doesn't. I don't want to lose ANOTHER tree to a storm this year. That would be 3 in 13 months.
I am doing nothing to prepare for the storm although I may get some chains to chain my vulnerable chestnut oak to the ground.
I hope it doesn't cause problems for the election........

I'm in NJ and we are hoping with fingers crossed that it will just go out to sea... We do have to get a few supplies this weekend.

It figures.....I'm off from work next week. Oh well, being stuck at home is a good reason to declutter.
Last Halloween's destructive snowstorm was a surprise so I hope this storm will be nothing like it. Maybe it's getting a lot of hype because it's the first of the season. The supermarkets will be overrun with people buying milk and bread (does everyone make french toast in a crisis?)

That's funny! I would think bread and peanut butter, because you don't have to cook or refridgerate that stuff. Anyway, best of luck! However, weather forecasters tend to get their panties in a wad so to speak, when any big storm *could* happen, and usually over-forecast even when it is happening.

I guess I should take in the wind chime collection.
So it turns out I do have some storm prep that needs to happen. We've got to strap down all 40 bee hives in the NYC based apiary so that they don't get destroyed if the storm hits. Our MA based hives are already strapped down as part of the black bear deterrent system, but I had not considered the fact that the hives are now light enough to be picked up by high winds (we finished extracting honey a few weeks ago -- pre-honey extraction they would have been heavy enough it wouldn't have been as much of a concern). Should be a fun and interested project today!!!

I'm flying into Boston Thursday the 1st at 0600. I think I should be fine just as long as it doesn't stop and linger. But historically when storms like this hit New England they pick up speed and get out of town that is except for the storm that walloped Vermont a few years ago.
I spent last Halloween afternoon in the airport at Newark watching them plow the runway. My plane left on time.
I hope it doesn't cause problems for the election........
Or the World Series games in Detroit....
