I want a really good pair of scissors. I would use them for cutting fabric for sewing and quilting. Does anyone know of a really good brand or where to look. I would not mind paying a good price for a pair that would last. (I am so fed up with my Made in China scissors that just gnaw at the fabric instead of a good clean cut!)

My "office" scissors are Fiskars. Granted, they're not in daily use, but they've been very sharp for about forever. Very comfortable to use, too. And I like that Fiskars makes other cutting tools, like plant pruners and saws. It's not just something they carry to fill out a product line.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve but I've tried Fiskars and they are OK for paper but not for fabric. And I want all metal, no plastic handles.

Plenty of scissors (and other products) made here are just as sucky as those made in China and in other placrs I guess. Mlne are made in Europe someplace because even my pricey Fiskars was brought low by constant fabric cutting. They still work ok for paper, though.

Ahh. I'm sorry, Florence. I've just been so happy with my Fiskars scissors, bypass pruner, and pole saw that I figured their other products had to be good too. Apparently not ...

When you find some that you really like, could you please post the type? I bought some Fiskars and they are not bad so far but nothing like the ones that I had for years but finally needed sharpening which was a bad idea.

Mine are Tanebasami from Japan. They are hand forged. Handle and blade are one piece. I think I paid about $30-40 twenty-five years ago.

I also like my Marks, ten-inch scissors and a much smaller pointy one for delicate snipping. Chromed and again, handle and blade are a single piece. Also bought them here, but the blade says that they were manufactured in Brazil. I have had those almost all my adult life and they still work beautifully. They can be sharpened, but I have never had to have that done for either of these shears.

That said, when I need a paper scissors, I just go to the dollar store. I have had a couple of those for at least eight or nine years.

I have Marks in my collection, also.

I have Marks sewing scissors that were handed down to me by my aunt. Not sure when she bought them but I would guess around 1970 when she lived in Germany, where they were made. They are fabulous.

I think I am going to go with the 8 inch Ginghers dressmaker's scissors. They are quite reasonably prices, no plastic handles, and manufactured in North Carolina. I will ask DH to get them for me for my birthday present so it will be 4 weeks until I will have them and can report back how I like them. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

One word, Fiskars (http://www.fiskars.eu/Crafting-Sewing/Products/Scissors). I've relied on Fiskars, my entire life. Never been disappointed. IMO, the best scissors made.
