View Full Version : Cast Iron Pans
My mom has quite a collection of Griswold cast iron (we are talking hundreds of pieces, being a Griswold...that's just what you do) anyway she is thinking of getting a new stove and asked me if she can use the cast iron on a flat surface stove. Anyone know? I told her that if she tried it to be very careful to not crack the surface of the stove - no scooting the pan around and to be gentle placing it on the stove. I have one cast iron pan but I only use it in the oven for cornbread since I'm too scared to use it on my flat stovetop.
She has not released any of this collection to my care....yet.
ive used le creuset on one with no ill effect.
I also have a bunch of Griswold, but more like 10 than hundreds! I've used them on a flat glass electric range many times with no ill effects. They work better on gas, of course, but dropping them on the glass is about the only danger for the electric stove.
The other concern, other than cracking the glass by dropping them, is that the pan could scratch the glass if the lower surface of the pan is rough.
I use my Griswold griddle pan on my flat stove at least once a week, no problems yet other than grease residue aka seasoning making cleanup on the burner a little more than I would like.

I use cast iron pots and pans (Lodge Logic) on our ceramic glass cook top and have never had any issues.
Thank you all. That is great to hear.
How did the idea that you can't use cast iron on a flat top stove get started, anyhow. I have always heard and believed that you could not use it. I have been only using my cast iron in the oven but now, I might just CAREFULLY try a skillet on top of the stove!
Thanks.
