Hey all, I'm new so I thought I'd introduce myself. I've long been a fan of simplicity and minimalism, but I've always struggled with pack-rat tendencies >8)

Well recently, I found myself pretty inundated with stuff. Not necessarily important stuff. Just stuff. I went on a bit of a binge and got rid of a bunch of stuff and it felt amazing. So I'm charting a new path where I ween myself off of as much stuff as possible (except my books). I'm excited to get to know you all. Seems like a great little community here.

Good to see you! Stuff will weigh you down. Oh I love my "stuff" that's for sure, but when I'm done with it, I want it gone.

Hi read,

So glad you joined the forums here since you will find many people who are also going through decluttering. I think there is a thread on it and lots of support.

I understand how you feel about your books -- I declutter but feel the same about mine too ...

Welcome, r-a-h...books have always been tough for me as well. With my last move I really bit the bullet and let go of all of them except ones either, 1-I knew I would read again, or 2- were author-signed. I donated the rest to a church's book sale I frequent every year. So far, I haven't missed them or regretted it. I do understand, though. Books evoke such emotion so many times. We associate certain feelings and memories with them, love the way the author makes us feel, or help us otherwise in some way. We hate to lose that.

I hope you find what you're looking for here...it's a fun, diverse group! Smart, interesting.

Welcome to the group Read. I definitely feel you on the book thing. They are by far the hardest thing for me to let go of. Books = comfort for me. This past summer I fought through it and donated about a 1/3 of my collection. It was hard at the time but honestly, now I can't even remember which ones they were >8) I have come to the realization though that I will never let go of my Dr. Seuss collection and my copy of Where the Red Fern Grows, it would break my heart :~)

Another welcome from a former stuff-a-holic!

I ditched the stuff habit a while back, although I often struggle with my inner demons whenever I pass a yard sale or thrift store. Now that I live in my RV, that's really not an option, so it makes it easy for me.

You'll love it here, enjoy.

Smart, interesting.I was just talking to a friend about this the other day, about books evoking emotion and being hard to part with. To this day whenever I travel I take a copy of Moving On by Larry McMurtry with me - the main character, Patsy Carpenter, she travels with me whenever I travel. The book is that magical to me. Rob

My pack-rat tendencies are inherited. However, I'm trying to break the code and be more minimalist. Full minimalism is not gonna happen, but less clutter will. I've been working on this for YEARS. Small house/lots of useful things. Books are not easy for me to get rid of, but I have given away quite a few in the past year.

Welcome! I "look" like I'm new, but I participated in the Simple Living Network forums for years back in the olden days. ;)

Jackie, if you don't mind sharing what was your user name on the old boards? Welcome back! Christine

My former user name was sistersue57. I spent a few years on the old boards - I can't remember too many names, except for She-Ra, and Kevin, at the moment... but I have recognized some people. Oh, and Billy Barebutt. I am trying to remember when that was. Probably around 2002-2007.

I love books. I collect old books. Really old. Just a very small collection. I also keep around a few how to and farming books. But I have pared down from several hundred to a small book case or so. Ereaders take up very little space, and I can carry my library everywhere I go. In my pocket.

Plus, half the really good stuff is free.

And then there's the library. :)
