"Don't fear mistakes, there are none" -Miles Davis
I'd like to invite everyone to share a quote, whether spoken or in a song lyric, from a musician that inspired them.
!Splat!
Sometimes you got to grab your world with your own two hands
Set it spinning off on a course all your own
Take yourself a big bag for your shoulder
Find yourself some good times and bring 'em on back home - Pat Green, Texas Singer/Songwriter and Musician.

Then you need to make sure everyone has a taste in music, where words are used, and not just instruments.:laff:
I listen to a lot, know a few, but the music that inspires me, typically does so without words. Example:

Oooops, I did it again.
That just popped into my smartheinie head, but I do have a song that has become my anthem, even though it is in the same context for Scotland.
It is the entire lyrics of Caledonia, written by Dougie MacLean (hope I spelled that correctly), but I first heard it on a cd with Dolores Keane singing it. I have loved this song from the first time I heard it and it is probably the only one for which I can remember the lyrics. Last year was kind of interesting for me and I still find it a little amazing how much this applies to everything that happened.
Whilst I am unable to put the entire lyrics here, the first lines are:
I don't know if you can see
The changes that have come over me
In these last few days I've been afraid
That I might drift away
The entire lyrics can be found at this link: http://www.risa.co.uk/sla/song.php?songid=22253 (http://www.risa.co.uk/sla/song.php?songid=22253)
Great topic.
If you asked my kids what musical quote has inspired me they would waste no time in replying: Let it Be. That's been my go-to inspirational quote/song since 1970.
Another one of my favorites is from Morning Has Broken:
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God’s re-creation of the new day
Every time I hear that song I get chills.
Toomuchstuff, if you look at my post I say, "whether spoken or in a song lyric".
The one I posted was from a jazz instrumentalist.
Hey Catherine, Let It Be is one my favorite inspirational lyrics too. McCartney wasn't known for writing lyrics as good as Lennon's but he really came through on Let It Be. The interesting thing about the "mother Mary" reference is that his mother's name was Mary, who had died when he was 14.
These are the best parts for me:
"and when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, Let It Be.
"and when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me..."
John Mayer, No Such Thing:
I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

My mistake. I am around enough young people, that when I think "spoken", I tend to think your referring to cRAP music.
Still, I have several artists that I listen to, that I do not speak their language, so I would not understand what they are saying, otherwise. (German, Icelandic)
I had a friend on the phone to a big name Rap star, and while a couple of the kids, were telling me "oh, you know his songs, you just don't know you do" and then getting blank stares when they said the names of them. It was more inspiring via the charity work they were doing. (more of an actions speak louder then words guy)
Two come to mind:
Bob Dylan--
How many roads most a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Yes, how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea ?
Yes, how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free ?
Yes, how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn't see ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Then the final verse of Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Robinson, 1758:
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the One I love:
Here's my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
Dylan, an obvious choice.
That line: the answer is blowin in the wind.
It's so simple, and so resonant. It's one of those lines that one understands beyond words, in that, one knows the mood and wisdom there but to analyze it, even effectively, might ruin it. It should be in one of those Zen calendars.

I will never be afraid again
I will keep on fighting till the end
I can walk on water I can fly
I will keep on fighting till I die.

I was reminded of my favorite song as a kid today. Last line from Bruce Cockburn's If I had a rocket launcher.
That and All in the Family, taught me there are more then one side and don't be afraid of change.

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm Through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, and strivings cease
My Comforter, My All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand....................by Keith Getty and Stuart Townsend

From John Lennon's song Beautiful Boy - "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
So true...

I know the line but I'm wondering how that inspires you?
