According to this article in the NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/16/science/a-low-tech-mosquito-deterrent.html?src=me&ref=general), a fan will effectively keep your outdoor area free of mosquitos.

I regularly use this approach at work. Works great, for as far as the fan's breeze can reach.

Thank you Sven, I have, in the past, successfully used citronella essential oil mixed with water in a spray bottle and it kept the bugs away. I did have to mist myself frequently though... :)
