View Full Version : celery
anyone grow celery? And if you do, are you successful? Do you have advice?
I have in the past, but with mixed results. The first year I tried, it was spectacular - large and lush and yummy. Wish I knew why. Since then I've had mixed results... and lots of bugs and slugs. It does require lots of water, and a long time from seed to harvest. I'm not planning on growing it this year.
It's grown commercially about 40 miles away, so it should do OK here (SoCal).
I do have success, but nothing I grow is as large as the food markets.
Next week, I will start four seeds. They go outside whenever Square Foot Gardening says they should go out. Last freeze around here is May 15.
I pretty much soaker hose them daily, along with all the other stuff. I only harvest one or two stalks at a time, and they keep going until first frost.

I grew this for the first time last year and everything was fine. I started off the seeds in modules and then transplanted into the ground. It pretty much looked after itself after this. I didn't get many plants growing from seeds though, but this was my fault due to late planting, lack of watering and not having much time for thew garden last year. I am going to plant again this year too.
