SiouxQ, are you getting things like pouches of tuna and chicken? Good for hubby’s protein needs.
Since you’re in the desert with all that sun, you should consider one of the battery generators with solar panels to charge it,

SiouzQ, more really really good ideas. I will share your posts with my husband so we can go about preparation more systematically. Thank you again!
Thanks for the reminder to get more canned soup, stuff for PB&J (including a few loaves of bread for the freezer), chicken and tuna pouches, and TP. Just placed a delivery order form Walmart.
Don’t forget about rechargeable fans. I have two of these. They are great.

Maybe it might be a good idea to start a frugal thread, a prepping for normal people type threads and others where people can support each other like it used to be. Perhaps asking for no politics and just good suggestions. Most of the threads here have turned to simple public policy.
we can’t change it but can focus on what we can do ourselves

Thanks Tradd, I'll add that to the list.
okay---sounds like you kids are getting the right idea. But yeah--stay home & off the roads. Hope that helps you some.
Checked stock and I’m good on toiletries and the like after an order I just placed on Amazon. Prime expires at the end of March and I’m not renewing. Since I have Walmart+, I can essentially get pretty much the same stuff plus cheaper groceries. Feels like stocking up for COVID all over again. I have an antique bed that sits higher than a modern bed. Lots of TP and toiletries under bed.
Still taking advantage of fresh produce at my grocery store. Since my running total wasn't that high, I threw in some toothbrushes (we need some) and some red lentils for the pantry. Since mandarin oranges are still on sale, I got another two bags of which most will go on the dehydrator. Sliced and dried, they are crunchy sweet treats!

Okay - I'm probably getting more personal than I normally get.
Successful shopping trip today, I think. But... while actually "processing" some of the food for storage/stocking up, I came to realize how nervous I really am about the future. I've always responded to financial challenges first via food. It's the one area I feel I have most control, especially with regards to savings and non-spending.
I'm thinking it's time to learn other ways, but I don't know what I have left to cut back on. We have no subscriptions, no memberships, no pay tv or anything else.
My ultimate goals are to downsize into an 800-1000 sf house on a very small piece of land with no HOA. So far the search has proven IMPOSSIBLE! While not giving up, I'm frustrated. I want to be able to hang my clothes out on a line to air dry in the sun. I want to do better at gardening, with just a small plot and maybe a fruit tree or two. I want solar panels on the roof for more independence from the grid. I want to be able to walk to the library - even if that is 2+ miles away. LOL.
And I want all this close to family!
MIL is in the hospital right now and dh is going to see her every day... A GOOD THING! But then I just paid bills and the extra expenditure of gas is easy to see.
The house we live in was build in 1886. It is our starter home that we have lived in for almost 35 years - LOL. If we were to stay here, the money saved for a new house would be used to convert from oil to electric, redo the entire kitchen, install a wood stove, and put solar panels on the roof. While that is doable, we would still be living in an over 2000 sf house. We would eventually have to hire folks for snow removal and grounds maintenance (not much work, but enough). And, with the rising cost of EVERYTHING, I'm not sure we could/should even try to maintain it on a fixed income.
And I want a dog.
This is why I said I'm nervous, scared, excited, frustrated, happy, etc. about my pending retirement.
All comments welcome - just try to be a little bit kind, please.![]()
